What is Ashtanga Primary Series?

The Ashtanga Primary Series is a structured yoga sequence developed by Indian yoga master Sri K. Pattabhi Jois in the 20th century. This dynamic and powerful practice consists of a series of interconnected yoga postures (asanas) performed in a specific order, combined with breath synchronization (vinyasa) and focused gaze (drishti).

The philosophy behind Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga is rooted in the eight limbs of yoga, as described by the ancient Indian sage Patanjali in the Yoga Sutras. These limbs include ethical guidelines (yamas), self-discipline (niyamas), physical exercises (asanas), breath control (pranayama), withdrawal of the senses (pratyahara), concentration (dharana), meditation (dhyana), and complete letting go of control (samadhi). Through the practice of the Ashtanga Primary Series, practitioners seek to integrate these aspects to achieve a state of physical strength, mental clarity, and spiritual connection.

The Ashtanga Primary Series is designed to be a daily practice that gradually builds strength, flexibility, and endurance in the body and mind. The sequence begins with Sun Salutations (Surya Namaskar A and B) to warm up the body and prepare it for the more demanding asanas that follow. This is followed by a series of standing postures, sitting postures, balancing postures, and ends with a series of relaxing postures and closing sequences.

Through regular practice of the Ashtanga Primary Series, practitioners can experience deepening in their yoga practice, increased body awareness, and a sense of inner peace and balance. However, it is important to practice with patience, humility, and respect for one's own boundaries and needs, and to remember that yoga is a personal journey that evolves over time.
