108 sun salutations on the summer solstice
Join us in celebrating the summer solstice and International Yoga Day, June 21, 2026. We gather for an energizing practice of 108 sun salutations - a tradition that is as much about presence and community as it is about physical strength. A reminder of cycles, change, and all that we are a part of.
We start with a meditation to find our sankalpa - a personal promise or intention for the practice. Then we move into 108 sun salutations. Through the rhythm, breath and repetition a meditative flow arises. We support each other, breathe together and share an experience that remains with us long after. Doing this together creates a very special energy.
It doesn't matter what level you are at, you can adapt the sun salutations to your own needs; everyone is welcome! And we encourage you to take breaks whenever you feel like it! Feel free to bring a journal if you wish.
What is the summer solstice?
The summer solstice, which in 2026 falls on June 21, marks the longest day of the year and symbolizes the triumph of light over darkness. By filling ourselves with the energy of the sun now, we strengthen ourselves and prepare ourselves mentally and physically for the next cycle, where the days gradually become shorter again.
Why exactly 108 sun salutations?
The number 108 has deep spiritual and cultural significance in many traditions. In the yogic tradition, it is considered a sacred number, with references dating back to the Vedas, the oldest texts in Hinduism. For example, a mala (prayer necklace) has 108 beads, and it is said that repeating a mantra 108 times is extra powerful.
What is a sankalpa?
A sankalpa is a Sanskrit word that means intention, resolution, or promise. It can be a phrase or a word that is well thought out and represents something you want to work towards. A sankalpa is thus a deeper promise than an everyday intention and is something that is often set for an entire cycle or a year at a time.
